Chroma Key Project
Heidegger Project
Reading Heidegger’s
stance on technology was most definitely very difficult in my opinion. There
were bits and pieces that I was able to pick up and understand, but there was
still some unclarity even in reading other notations made on the internet. The
part that I did understand and find the most interesting was his talk of
technology being a “means to an end” if looked at as a human activity. The
association of “true” and “correct” was quite interesting too, but I didn’t
want to incorporate that aspect to prevent the creation of a vague piece. I created a piece that involves a human leisurely activity
and collaborates with technology to create an interactive piece. There is a very natural aspect about human activity so I created a book (pages made of cardstock and cover made of thick cardboard
covered in cloth) which is a representation of one of the popular items humans
used to spend their time, but it does, almost always, have an end. The story
within every book either closes with, “The End”, a last page with the hint of a pt.2
coming soon, or just an assumptive close, which is why I chose to use Barbara Dickinson's poem, "A Light In Spring". Dickinson was very clear in explaining a light that leaves, with no known knowledge of returning.
I carved a hole in the center of
the entire book, making it possible for a small light to be placed in the
center of it and as one turns the last page, the light becomes dim and eventually turns off.. At the end
of the book, the light will be completely off adding exaggeration to the “off”
or “end” effect. Since we go into a story as a human activity, we already
assume there is an end whether it’s “true” or not true. This is why technology
struggles to survive with the same dimensions of an end. It was displayed where
there was a good amount of student traffic inside of the Church of Fine Arts building. I wasn't too crazy on whether it displayed it
laying face up on a Pedi stool or drilled to a clear wall allowing the
audience to look up at it instead because the naturesque covering of it allowed the vine-like power cord to drape freely in plain sight . It did promote an
interactive effect. There are still a
few tweaks and twerks to add or take away from, but overall it was completed.
